A Brief Introduction to the World of Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Published on August nd, 2011

Alternative healing, also known as natural or complementary healing therapies, is becoming increasingly popular these days. This is basically a type of healing practice that deviates from the methods used in modern medicine. Some of the healing modalities classified under this category have been influenced by historical and even cultural traditions.

Alternative healing practices have been around for many years but it wasn’t until recently that Western hospitals started providing such kind of treatment. Complementary or natural healing methods are well-known in Eastern countries, however, the West just started to recognize the practice due to the growing number of patients asking for such kind of treatments. The reason for the rising popularity of natural healing techniques is due to the expensive cost of conventional medical treatments.

Another selling point of alternative medicine is the fact that the techniques used are quite diverse. It can be based from spiritual beliefs, traditional medicine, or from folk knowledge. There are also techniques that are founded and established from newly conceptualized healing methods. Though holistic health practices are now starting to be recognized as an alternative to conventional medicine, the medical community still refuse to accept these practices because there is no sufficient evidence or data that will support their efficacy and safety. That is why, conventional medical practitioners do not adapt the techniques taught in alternative medicine.

Some of the most sought after kinds of natural healing methods include massage therapy, acupressure, reflexology, chiropractic, reiki, ayuverda, and acupuncture. These practices can be classified into many different categories:

Manipulative and Body Based Methods. This kind of holistic healing is based on body manipulation and movement. Reflexology, Alexander technique, and osteopathy are good examples of manipulative and body based healing methodologies

Energy Therapy. This natural healing technique is said to affect the body’s energy field, which existence is yet to be confirmed up to this day. This kind of healing treatment manipulates the body’s biofields through the use of body manipulation or by providing pressure, like in the case of therapeutic touch and qi gong.

When you have decided to give alternative healing therapies a try, be sure to look for a certified and licensed traditional medicine practitioner. Compared to finding licensed medical doctors, spotting a credible CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) practitioner can be a bit of a challenge. So asking referrals from reputable health care practitioners as well as conducting your own research will definitely help a lot.
